Our STRY

Hotel STRY's history is a long one.

Constructed in 1875, this building has lived so many lives.

Hotel STRY originally had three tenants: Samuel Lauler’s hardware store in the central unit, a small department store owned by John Deneau and Augustus Rondot in the corner unit, and Johnston’s Bank in the third.

Since then, many businesses have called this building home, including D.J. Barron’s Grocery in the early 1900s and Kemp Furniture from 1919-1961. This block was the economic heart of Amherstburg.

In February 2019, Lauri and Kaine Brouyette sat across from the future Hotel STRY having lunch. Apart from the restaurant, this block of Murray Street was largely rundown – it had been years since it had been a bustling business centre.

Beneath the layers of paint and neglect, the Brouyettes saw the future this building and street could have. The building’s bones and beautiful architectural details were still there, they just needed a little help.

The Brouyettes knew these buildings weren’t done telling their story.

Hotel STRY’s transformation would be the first step in their mission to reinvigorate Amherstburg’s spirit of entrepreneurship.
